Homemade Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce is one of my favorite things about Thanksgiving. I grew up eating the sauce shaped like a can and it was my favorite even back then. Several years ago I finally decided to give a homemade Cranberry Sauce Recipe a try . . . Mind Blown!

First of all, how did I not know how simple it is to make cranberry sauce at home? Second, you can add whatever flavors and ingredients you want. Make it tangy, sweet, savory or even spicy.

Last year I made Cranberry Apple Sauceand for this Thanksgiving I decided to make Cranberry Cherry Sauce. Both are great if you like your sauce to be sweet and tangy.

This post has two recipes for the price of one! Make a large batch of cranberry sauce and use some to make an extra Thanksgiving dessert.

I’m so glad you like it! I can eat homemade cranberry sauce by the bowl-full … especially with cream. I like your idea to use the marshmallow gravy. I’ll have to try that sometime!

FAQs

What takes the bitterness out of cranberry sauce? ›

If you don't have maple syrup (pancake syrup WILL NOT do, y'all), try honey or a more neutral sweetener like agave syrup, brown rice syrup, or even simple syrup. All of these syrupy ingredients are a perfect quick fix for bitter cranberry sauce.

How do you cut the tartness out of cranberry sauce? ›

Sugar – you NEED sugar in this recipe to cut through the tartness of the cranberries. I use cane sugar here, but you can use any sugar of choice, from granulated, to coconut sugar, to maple syrup.

How to jazz up cranberry sauce? ›

Canned cranberry sauce is delicious on its own, but there are ways you can dress it up for any meal. Adding fruits like oranges or berries brings different flavors and acidity to the sauce. Folding in crushed nuts at the end adds texture variety.

Why didn t my homemade cranberry sauce thicken? ›

Try reducing the sauce down even further so more of the liquid cooks off and the mixture thickens. If that doesn't work, add a thickener like gelatin, pectin or a cornstarch slurry (cornstarch whisked into juice or water). Let the sauce cool before refrigerating to completely set.

What flavors counteract bitterness? ›

Sweetness: From sugar, honey, fruits or otherwise, sweetness will counteract bitter and sour flavours. It can also be used to cut down the heat of a particularly spicy meal. Saltiness: Salt plays two very important roles in flavouring a dish.

How do you fix bland cranberry sauce? ›

Maple syrup, brown sugar and even honey can make your cranberry sauce more dynamic. And don't forget the spices! Cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, citrus zest and star anise all work well with cranberries and can be added while the sauce cooks to infuse your sauce with flavor.

What thickens cranberry sauce? ›

The sugar in the syrup helps the mixture thicken. It could also be because you haven't cooked the mixture long enough. The cranberries need to cook long enough to burst so that they release plenty of pectin which is a thickener naturally found in cranberries.

Do you serve cranberry sauce warm or cold? ›

Is cranberry sauce supposed to be hot or cold? Either! Some prefer to have it served fresh and warm, straight out of the pot, while others need it completely cooled down to enjoy the flavours. Personally, we prefer cooled sauce.

Is canned cranberry sauce better than homemade? ›

While there are some editors who prefer homemade cranberry sauce, the canned variety also has quite a following. "There's something so beautifully perfect about the texture of canned cranberry sauce, and none of those homemade mess will ever compete," says Senior Digital Food Editor Kimberly Holland.

What can I add to cranberry sauce to make it less tart? ›

Taste and, if the mixture is too tart (keeping in mind that cranberry sauce is supposed to be a little tart!), add more orange juice, honey or maple syrup to taste. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.

Why is cranberry sauce canned upside down? ›

According to Ocean Spray, that's intentional: It creates a seamless serving experience. The cans are "filled and labeled upside down with the rounded edge on top and the sharp can-like edge on the bottom to keep the jelly whole," an Ocean Spray spokesperson told CNN Business.

How do you neutralize bitterness? ›

Sweet ingredients like sugar, honey, fruit juices and maple syrup will balance bitterness. Any dish can also be balanced with a touch of a sour ingredient like lemon or vinegar. Finally, a fatty ingredient like oil, cream. coconut cream or butter will also tame bitterness.

How do you make cranberry juice less bitter? ›

I buy 100% pure cranberry juice, pour about a third of a glass and then add water. Instead of adding sugar (to reduce the bitterness) I decided to add salt!! OMG!! it tastes delicious!

Why do my cranberries taste bitter? ›

Cranberries are generally considered safe whether they are cooked or raw. However, because of their notoriously bitter, sharp taste, most people prefer not to eat them raw or unsweetened. This bitterness is due to the high tannin content of cranberries.

How do you reduce bitterness in hot sauce? ›

Peppers with significant white pith can also make a sauce taste bitter. To remove this bitterness, it can be helpful to remove the seeds and pith before fermenting. Otherwise, it might be necessary to strain the sauce later on to remove some of the seedy grit.
